Data from Iberinform, cited by 24Horas, indicate that in 2025 there were 3,640 insolvencies, 71 fewer than in 2024. However, in December, insolvencies increased by 0.3% compared with the previous month.

According to the same media outlet, there was a 3.4% increase in voluntary insolvencies, i.e. those filed by the companies themselves. On the other hand, there was a 2% reduction in insolvencies requested by others. In total, 2,014 companies had their insolvency applications accepted in 2025, 80 fewer than in 2024.

Where are most insolvencies recorded?

Porto and Lisbon recorded the highest number of insolvencies, with 882 and 876 companies, respectively. In Porto, there was a 1.9% reduction, while in Lisbon, there was a 4.4% increase. The highest growth rates were in the districts of Horta (+50%), Castelo Branco (+24%), Leiria (+18%) and Faro (+13%). On the other hand, Beja (-50%), Ponta Delgada (-28%), and Viseu (-24%) recorded the largest declines, according to 24 Horas.

Data by sector

Among sectors, telecommunications recorded the largest increase in insolvencies, with a 125% increase. Agriculture, Hunting and Fishing increased by 39%, and Transport by 28%. The sectors that declined in insolvencies were Electricity, Gas and Water, and Manufacturing.

Business creation

The positive trend in business creation continued. A total of 52,617 companies were set up in 2025, 2,448 more than in 2024. Lisbon was the city with the most company formations, with 16,360, while Porto had 9,101.

The districts with the highest growth in business creation were Viseu (+19%), Ponta Delgada (+14%), Leiria (+13%) and Vila Real (+13%), while Horta recorded the largest decline (-15%).
