According to Lusa, the Government “already has the relevant legislation in the legislative process”.

"On this day, 13 January 2026, the day that marks the 120th anniversary of Livraria Lello, the day that marks the 25th anniversary of the official opening of Porto 2001 European Capital of Culture, a day, therefore, of reference, a day of remembrance, a day of appeal to our heritage and our identity, I would like to tell you that the Government has already submitted the bill that will reclassify this Livraria Lello building as a national monument, and it will therefore be definitively enshrined in law,” said Luís Montenegro.

The head of government, speaking at the ceremony marking the 120th anniversary of Livraria Lello, which is being celebrated today, said that the act that will “perpetuate the identity, as well as the connection of the whole country, of the whole community, to this building and this project” will take place “in the coming weeks”.

The reclassification of the Livraria Lello building in the centre of Porto began in 2021.

“It is very important because we have been waiting for years to be classified. The process has been completed, everything went well, only the final step was missing,” said Aurora Pinto, head of Livraria Lello, on the sidelines of the ceremony, when asked about Luís Montenegro’s announcement.
