“It’s a decision I made and happy knowing my pets will be looked after.” Jenny Clarke, President of Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA) and her “Pop-Up” Shop colleague Anita Wight endorsed the Algarve Animal Rescue’s Legacy or “Pet Plan” signing up straight away.

Sid Richardson CIC of ARA, and his General Manager, João Ferriera met with the two APAA ladies during 2023. “We discussed at length how we could meet the demands needed for people and their pet(s) after they were too ill or perhaps unfortunately died.”

Sid nods anticipating the response. “Yes. Before the problem happens!” They all have personal pets, and felt committed enough to resolve this dilemma whilst healthy and alive. There is no doubt that ARA’s Cabanita is a beautiful shelter, with space and purpose-built kennels for the dogs and cats in their care. “I couldn’t believe that this was a 5-star hotel for animals! Very tempted to book myself in.” Anita nods, grinning. After a lot of discussion and weighing up the pro’s and con’s they arrived at a working document.

Anita was appointed “Ambassador” a joint-partnership needed a go-between, who would meet with people and discuss their problems at a personal level. “Of course, we have videos and websites, which give you all the information. But, sometimes, requires personal reassurance.”

Not only that, Anita is willing to arrange hands-on-visits to “Cabanita” a full show around the grounds and meet the hard-working dedicated team of carers. Sid has several of his own pets. João too has paraplegics, dogs who cannot find a home because of their past traumas. A goat too! He looks sheepish.

“Every animal deserves a chance. I cannot let them down.” His warmth and charm ensures a strong but kind team at ARA. “The problem is funding the shelter with 100 dogs and 30 cats to feed and care for.
