Datapulse.de compared the average state pension with the actual annual expenditures of people aged 60 and over in a Europe-wide analysis.

The key findings for Portugal:
- Average State Pension: €11,500 per year.
- Typical Annual Expenses: €13,800.
- This leads to a calculated deficit of 17% (before taxes).
Compared to other European countries, Portugal falls within the majority of countries where pensions do not fully cover typical living costs. In most nations, retirees face a shortfall of over 30%, and only in four countries do state pensions exceed everyday expenses.













Wide of the mark and have to be a married couple paying in excess of 30 years contributions, the minimum pension is 316.45 euros per month which many are on, 4120 per year.
