"The President of the Republic accepted the resignation request of the Minister of Home Affairs, who felt she no longer possessed the personal and political conditions necessary to hold the position, and which was proposed to her by the Prime Minister, who will temporarily assume the respective powers, in accordance with Article 6, nº2, of the Organic Law of the Government (Decree-Law No. 87-A/2025, of 25 July), as soon as the dismissal becomes effective," says the official statement from Belém.
Constitutional lawyer Maria Lúcia Amaral took over the portfolio of Minister of Home Affairss on 5 June 2025, with the inauguration of the XXV Government, after eight years at the head of the Provedoria da Justiça, an institution responsible for receiving complaints from citizens whose fundamental rights are violated.
After eight months in office, Maria Lúcia Amaral was accused of not being on the ground during Storm Kristin, which hit Portugal. The Minister was also accused of mismanagement of the country during the summer fires of 2025.
