The incident occurred at 9 pm on Wednesday, 11 February, and led to traffic interruptions on the Linha do Leste, which connects Abrantes, in the district of Santarém, to the border with Spain (Badajoz).
Telmo Ferreira, operations officer of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), told Lusa that the incident occurred in the Bemposta area, in Abrantes, after the train collided with debris and a tree that slid onto the line.
The train was carrying passengers, but the incident did not cause any injuries, Telmo Ferreira added.
Following the incident, members of Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) were deployed to the site to restore the train to the line, repair damage, and clean the track.
