According to preliminary data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) for 2025, released today, these activities generated total revenues of €7.2 billion, a 7.2% increase, and €5.5 billion in room revenue, a 6.8% increase.

Despite the increases compared to 2024, all these indicators represented a slowdown in relation to the previous variation: the 3.0% increase in guests compares with 5.2% in 2024, the 2.2% increase in overnight stays with 4.1% in 2024, total revenue fell by 3.8 percentage points and room revenue by 4.2 percentage points.

This slowdown trend was also observed in overnight stays by non-residents, which increased by 0.8%, compared to 4.9% a year earlier.

Conversely, overnight stays by residents grew from 2.2% in 2024 to 5.4% last year.

Despite these trends, non-residents continued to account for 69.4% of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments, totalling 57 million, compared to 25.1 million residents.

In this area, the Central (68.2%) and Alentejo (66.8%) regions had the highest shares of overnight stays by national residents, while Madeira (82.5%) and Greater Lisbon (81.4%) had the greatest dependence on foreign markets.

According to the INE (National Institute of Statistics), foreign markets predominated in all months of 2025, "with greater prevalence in the months of October and May," when they reached 74.8% and 74.4% of total overnight stays, respectively.

December (38.7%) and August (35.8%) were the months with the highest percentage of overnight stays by residents.

Last year, the British market was again the main source of overnight stays, contributing 17.7% to total overnight stays by non-residents, despite a 1.5% decrease, followed by the German (11.3%), North American (9.6%), and Spanish (9.1%) markets.

Spain was the main foreign market in the Central region (24.6%), West and Tagus Valley (22.5%), Alentejo (18.2%), North (16.7%) and Setúbal Peninsula; the USA in the Azores Autonomous Region (17.0%) and Greater Lisbon (16.8%); Germany in the Madeira Autonomous Region (23.8%); and the United Kingdom in the Algarve (35.9%).

In the fourth quarter alone, 7.2 million guests and 17.1 million overnight stays were recorded, representing increases of 2.9% and 1.9%, respectively, while total revenue reached €1.4 billion (+5.4%) and room revenue €1 billion (+6.8%).
