The footage was captured by the remotely operated vehicle SuBastian at roughly 250 m depth during the “Vida en los extremos” expedition. Scientists said sightings of the giant jellyfish are uncommon because of its deep-water habitat and fragile body structure.

Expedition chief scientist María Emilia Bravo said researchers were surprised by the biodiversity observed along the continental margin. The mission also recorded other notable deep-sea features, including an extensive coral reef and a deep-water whale fall.
