The information was published by The Guardian, which also stated that the new rules will be applied from 25 February.

The warning was issued by the Home Office following complaints from British citizens living abroad who were denied travel to the UK. In this case, according to The Guardian, dual national citizens are obligated to show their British passport when travelling to the UK, or pay, according to the same media outlet, £589 for “a certificate of entitlement”, where the second nationality may be attached to the passport, to travel, regardless of the means of transport.

Quoted by The Guardian, a Home Office spokesperson stated that “from 25 February 2026, all dual British citizens will need to present either a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement to avoid delays at the border.”

The new measure is part of a digitisation programme to improve the safety of the travel experience and give the government “greater power to stop those who pose a threat from setting foot in the country and gives us a fuller picture of immigration”, as quoted by The Guardian.
