Chinese New Year will be celebrated in Portimão from 20 to 28 February, in the riverside area and at the Old Fish Market. Under the theme “Happy Chinese New Year,” the program includes shows, exhibitions, and cultural demonstrations that are set to fill the city with colour, music, and festive spirit.
The celebration is organised by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Portugal and co-organised by Portimão City Council, with institutional support from the Macau Economic and Trade Delegation in Lisbon, the Macau Tourism Services Directorate, and the Organising Committee for the Happy Chinese New Year in Southern Portugal.

According to the municipality, the event aims to showcase China’s traditions and identity, bringing dances, customs, music, and striking imagery to Portimão’s riverside. It’s an opportunity for both residents and visitors to discover more about this ancient culture while celebrating one of its most important festive dates. All activities are free and open to the community.
The official opening ceremony took place on 20 February at 3:00 pm in Largo da Antiga Lota. The program included the iconic Dragon and Lion Dances, as well as musical performances and traditional folk dances. One of the highlights was the beginning of a documentary exhibition exploring the customs of the Spring Festival, the traditional celebration that marks family reunions in China.
Over the weekend, at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm, the same venue hosts a series of cultural performances, including Kung Fu demonstrations, traditional music, and dance.
