"Days of Ash" is "a direct response to current events, inspired by the many extraordinary and courageous people fighting on the front lines for freedom," the band wrote on its website.
This EP consists of five songs and a poem, released ahead of an album announced for the end of 2026, the first with new songs since 2017, reported the France-Presse (AFP) agency.
Exploring current events
The band, a star of the 80s and 90s with its activist music, explores themes such as war, violence, and politics.
In "Yours Eternally," about the war between Ukraine and Russia, U2 gives the floor to Ukrainian soldier Taras Topolia.
The band will release a music video on 24 February to mark the fourth anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Criticism of the United States of America
"American Obituary" deals with the death of Renee Good, a mother murdered on 7 January by an ICE (United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agent.
These new songs are "songs of defiance, dismay and lament," commented singer Bono.
"There is nothing normal about this crazy and revolting moment, and we need to come together so that we can regain confidence in the future," stressed the singer.

Only to be expected from these virtue signalling tax avoiders. Yawn!

We don't need any help or advice here in the USA. Go back to Ireland, pay your exorbitant taxes, and watch your own country self-destruct. No one cares about aging rockers still trying to act 18.

This is what happens when you are no longer relevant.
While I don't agree with ICE tactics, if you weaponize your car, don't expect a good ending.
Why don't the sing about the injustices in their country?
Because it won't sell records

Sorry, Tony, but we in the US do need help. We are rapidly becoming a fascist state, aided and abetted by people like you, who seem to think that having a Gestapo-style military force invade our cities and kill whoever they choose with impunity, is OK. It is not OK, and if it takes an Irish band, aging or not, to speak out against it, because people here don't care, or have lost their humanity, or are too self-absorbed or too afraid to take a stand, then we should be grateful.
