In a statement released on the Portuguese communities portal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) draws attention to the deteriorating security situation in these states, following a military operation over the weekend that resulted in the death of the leader of one of the largest drug cartels.
In the statement, the MNE says that the Portuguese embassy has received reports of serious public order disturbances following this military operation, including road blockades, shootings, and the detention of pedestrians in various areas of the country, especially in Jalisco (Guadalajara), Guanajuato, and Michoacán (Morelia).
He reminds that it is "highly recommended" to travel to Mexico with medical insurance, "as comprehensive as possible, with extensive coverage of medical expenses" throughout the stay, including repatriation or medical evacuation to the place of origin, due to the high cost of health services.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminds travellers that Mexico has a high crime rate and advises them to consult the security conditions and travel advice.
It also recommends registering trips in the "Traveller Registration" app, emphasising that this facilitates the actions of Portuguese authorities in the event of any emergency involving Portuguese citizens abroad.
Registration on the "Traveller Registration" app allows you to receive information on security conditions, access the contact details of Portuguese diplomatic and consular representations, and have a direct link to the Consular Emergency Office.
Mexico has been experiencing a wave of violence since 22 February, following the death of the leader of one of the largest drug cartels in an operation carried out with US support, which generated strong protests from cartel members.
