Sara Leitão Moreira justified the decision by stating that the court had not given her enough time to prepare the defence of the head of government between 2005 and 2011.

Following the resignation, the court ordered the appointment of a public defender so that the trial could proceed, and the session on 24 February was interrupted for a few minutes to allow him to be called.
