"Cristiano Ronaldo announces the acquisition of a 25% stake in the Spanish Second Division club Unión Deportiva Almería, a significant step in the continued expansion of his global investment portfolio," it reads, without revealing the 'numbers' of the deal.
The captain of the Portuguese national football team plays for the Saudi club Al-Nassr FC, and the president of Almeria is the Saudi businessman Mohamed Al Khereiji, considered one of the richest Arabs in the world.
CR7 Sports Investments is a newly created subsidiary of CR7 SA, established to consolidate and manage the investments of the striker who came up through Sporting's youth system and has played for Real Madrid in Spain, as well as Manchester United in England and Juventus in Italy.
According to the official statement, Ronaldo's choice of Almeria (southern Spain) reflects his long-standing commitment to ownership and management of professional football.
"I have always had the ambition to contribute to football beyond the pitch. UD Almería is a club with solid foundations and clear growth potential. I am very excited to work alongside the management team to support the next phase of the club's development," said the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.
Almeria's president, Mohamed Al Khereiji, declared himself "very happy" with Ronaldo's decision to join the club. "He is considered the best player of all time, knows the Spanish league very well and understands the potential of what we are building here, both in terms of the team and the youth system," said Al Khereiji.
The newspaper La Voz de Almería reported that Al Khereiji intends to potentially sign the Portuguese player to represent the Andalusian club.
