Digital visas arrive in Europe

A European country has confirmed the introduction of an electronic visa system for travellers not from the Schengen Area.

Italy confirmed that, from the second quarter of 2026, a new electronic visa system and expanded biometric order controls will be in force.

The changes may only be noticed when applying for visas or passing through airport control. With this, Italy pretends to gradually move visa applications to digital platforms. The plans are intended for use when travelling by aeroplane or boat.

Italy's announcement puts the country ahead of the European Union's plans for EES and ETIAS authorisation, previously reported by The Portugal News.
