The awards will be presented next month in the North American city of Providence.
The IPMA is divided into 11 categories and, this year, includes nominees from six countries: Portugal, the United States, Canada, South Africa, Romania and France, the organisation indicated in a statement sent to the Lusa news agency.
In what will be a night dedicated to celebrating the community, music and diverse sounds of the Portuguese diaspora, the categories in competition in this 14th edition of the IPMA are Video Clip of the Year, Instrumental, World Music, Traditional, Fado, RAP/Hip-Hop/Dance, Rock, Pop and Popular Music, Song of the Year and New Talent.
Awards by music genre
In the Popular Music category, only representatives from Portugal are competing: Karyna, Zé Amaro, Cláudia Nayara and Victor Rodrigues.
Kajó Soares, Mariana Arroja, Teresinha Landeiro, and Vera Varatojo are competing in the Fado category, while Ricardo Luiz, Descendentes, Joey Medeiros, and Cláudia Martins are competing in the Traditional category.
In Pop, RAFA, Marisa Liz, Luís Trigacheiro & Nena, The Black Mamba, and Mackenzie Arromba are competing, and in World Music, Diana Vilarinho, Assol Garcia, Karetus, Conan Osíris & Júlio Pereira, and Tiago Nacarato & Cainã Cavalcante are competing.
In Instrumental, Hélder Bruno, Ensemble 17, Célio, and Rui Massena will compete for the prize, and in Rock, The Redbeds, CMAGIC5, Josh Pereira, and The Bateleurs will compete for the prize.
Competing in the RAP/Hip-Hop/Dance category are Danni Gato, Nelson Freitas & Djodje, Katia De Vallier, Agir, and Bankrol Hayden.
Music Video of the Year
“Santa” by Mimicat, directed by Rodrigo Pedras (Portugal), “Respirar” by Calema & Sara Correia, directed by João Reis Moreira, “Leaving You Behind” by Nuno, directed by Sebastian Crayn, and “Não Gosta” by Bárbara Bandeira, directed by Ruben do Valle, are competing for Music Video of the Year.
Song of the Year
The nominees for Song of the Year are “Visita Inesperada (ft. Jota.pê)” by Teresinha Landeiro, “Carta de Despedida” by Descendentes, “Cotovia” by Diana Vilarinho, and “Porta 43” by Luís Trigacheiro & Diogo Piçarra.
Best New Artist
The finalists in the New Talent category – Sophia Tavares (Portugal) and Ben Rodrigues (South Africa) – will perform live at the event, with a secret jury composed of judges scattered throughout the audience.
The winner will receive a prize of US$2,000 (€1,711, at the current exchange rate).
The awards ceremony will take place on 25 April at the Providence Centre for the Performing Arts in Rhode Island, and will feature performances by artists such as Calema, D.A.M.A, Richie Campbell, Assol Garcia, Nemanus, and Nelson Sobral, according to a statement released by the organisation.
