In a press release, AMAL expresses its intentions to “continue to improve public road passenger transport services in the Algarve region and continue its commitment to decarbonising the sector.”
“AMAL is the first Intermunicipal Community in the country to launch a second international tender in the area of mobility, in this case for the period between 2026 and 2034.”
In order to put together the best possible proposal, AMAL gathered “input from industry experts, institutions, the 16 municipalities of the Algarve, and the opinions of users and the general public.” This made it possible to understand the needs of Algarve users and improve public transport services in the region.
“The contract will cover inter-municipal road transport services, municipal services in 12 municipalities in the Algarve that have delegated these functions to AMAL, and also includes some inter-regional services.”
AMAL also states that there will be a focus on “the decarbonisation of the transport sector, as more than 50% of the fleet assigned to the contract will have to be composed of clean energy vehicles.”
“Following approval by the Intermunicipal Council, the international tender will be launched at the end of this month. The contract is worth around €108 million, is scheduled to start in December this year (2026) and will last for eight years.”
