Later today, 9 March, the new Head of State will visit the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Palace, whose gardens will be open to the public, the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences (ISCSP) for a meeting with young people, and the Ajuda National Palace, where he will decorate his predecessor, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

According to the Constitution, the President-elect takes office before Parliament on the last day of the outgoing President's term, making the following declaration of commitment: "I swear on my honour to faithfully perform the duties with which I am invested and to defend, comply with, and enforce the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic."

According to the protocol for the solemn inauguration session, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, will open the session at 9 am, then suspend it to receive the President of the Republic, the President-elect, and the guests.

Presence of international leaders

The King of Spain, Felipe VI, confirmed in mid-February that he would attend the inauguration of the new Portuguese head of state. It was also reported that the presidents of Angola, João Lourenço, Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, São Tomé and Príncipe, Carlos Vila Nova, and Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta, will be present.

António José Seguro will arrive at the São Bento Palace at 9:30 am, accompanied by his wife, Margarida Maldonado Freitas, and their two children. Fifteen minutes later, at 9:45 am, the current President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will arrive.

At 10 am, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, "holding the original Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, announces that the President-elect will take the oath of office."

Inauguration ceremony

The President-elect stands and takes an oath on the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.

Next, a 21-gun salute from naval artillery is heard, and the Band of the National Republican Guard, formed in the Hall of Lost Steps, plays the national anthem.

After the reading and signing of the act of investiture, the President of the Assembly of the Republic gives a speech, followed by António José Seguro's first address as President of the Republic.

At the end of the session, the President of the Republic bids farewell to his predecessor and goes to the Noble Hall, where the usual exchange of greetings takes place.

Afterwards, the new President goes to the Jerónimos Monastery to lay a wreath at Camões' tomb at 1 pm. His arrival at Belém Palace is scheduled for 1:25 pm, accompanied by his family. In Belém, António José Seguro will host a lunch at 2 pm for foreign heads of state and other high-ranking officials, with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in attendance. At 3 pm, the palace gardens will be open to the public.

At 4:30 pm, at ISCP, the new head of state will meet with 52 young people, a symbolic number representing the years of Portuguese democracy, and at 6 pm, he will uphold the tradition of decorating his predecessor with the Grand Collar of the Order of Liberty at the Ajuda National Palace, where he will host a reception at 6:30 pm.

António José Seguro, former Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, was elected President of the Republic in the second round of the presidential elections on 8 February, with more than 3.5 million votes, a record number, 66.84% of the votes cast, against André Ventura, president of Chega.
