RTP revealed the information on 8 March, stating that the "rapid" border control computer system was inoperative due to a problem with the passport-reading system used at airports.
According to ANA Aeroportos, there were longer-than-normal waiting times for both arrivals and departures. According to RTP, the problems arose after technical issues at the AIMA data centre.

A system which is having teething problems, not fully tested with no roll back/ fall back facility and/or not fit for purpose. Is this just the Portuguese version of an EU design ? If not, why is it not standardised across the whole area? Let's hope they get this better managed in future.
