New figures from Statistics Portugal show that the country welcomed 32.5 million visitors in 2025, representing a 3% increase compared with 2024.

Visitor numbers were particularly strong during the summer months, highlighting Portugal’s enduring popularity among holidaymakers from around the world.

The year concluded on a strong note, with 1.9 million visitors arriving in December 2025 alone, generating 4.2 million overnight stays across the country.

Robust international demand, coupled with a growing focus on sustainability and promoting tourism throughout the year, has helped push visitor numbers to record levels.

Tourism continues to play a vital role in Portugal’s economy, supporting jobs, regional development and international investment.

The latest tourism data follows Portugal being named ‘Economy of the Year’ by The Economist for 2025, acknowledging the country’s impressive economic growth and resilience.

Investment has played an important role in supporting the wider economy, including the tourism sector. One significant contributor has been the Portugal Golden Visa residency-by-investment programme, which has attracted international capital into a range of industries.

Through the programme, applicants can invest a minimum of €500,000 in eligible alternative investment funds, many of which are focused on Portugal’s expanding sectors and long-term economic development.

Paul Sheedy, special advisor at the Portugal Future Fund, an alternative investment fund approved for Portugal’s Golden Visa programme, said: “Golden Visa investors are supporting economic growth, boosting industries such as hospitality, tourism, renewable energy, tech, as well as media and international events.

“These investors are supporting Portugal’s continued growth while securing benefits for themselves and their families.”

While the Algarve continues to be closely associated with Portugal’s classic sun-and-sea holidays, the country’s tourism success is increasingly being driven by a wider range of destinations.

Major cities such as Lisbon and Porto remain key attractions for international visitors, thanks to their rich cultural heritage, historic neighbourhoods and renowned culinary scenes. Meanwhile, destinations such as Madeira and the Azores are attracting travellers looking for outdoor adventure, nature-based tourism and eco-friendly experiences.

A key factor behind this sustained growth is Portugal’s broader strategy to present itself as a destination that can be enjoyed throughout the year rather than only during the summer season.

Initiatives such as ‘Year-Round Portugal’, led by the Ministry of Economy and Turismo de Portugal, aim to highlight attractions across the country in every season. By promoting cultural events, gastronomy, nature tourism and regional experiences, the programme encourages visitors to explore beyond traditional peak travel periods.

Digital marketing has also played an important role in expanding Portugal’s international reach.

National tourism authorities have invested heavily in online promotion and global campaigns designed to showcase the country’s diverse landscapes, cities and experiences to a worldwide audience.

Accommodation options are also evolving in response to rising demand. Portugal has experienced growth in luxury hotels, boutique guesthouses and serviced apartments, reflecting the increasing number of travellers seeking premium experiences.

At the same time, the cruise sector continues to expand. Lisbon has developed into a major stop on Mediterranean cruise routes, bringing thousands of international visitors to the city each year.
