Under the banner of defending democratic values, the group will gather at Praça do Comércio in Lisbon between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm, joining a global movement of solidarity with the "No Kings" protests currently taking place across the United States.
The objective is to send a clear message to Washington, D.C.: that current policies under the Trump administration and what the group describes as "brazen corruption" are fundamentally out of sync with the wishes and values of the American people, including those residing abroad.
For the members of AMPT UP, United States politics and policies no longer stop at the water's edge, affecting not only U.S. citizens but also the global geopolitical balance.
The collective asserts that standing up for democracy is a duty, even from a distance, refusing to see the democratic system undermined by the "greed of a handful of criminals using illegitimate power to suppress people's power."
The Lisbon mobilisation aims to show the world that the international community of Americans is alert and active in denouncing practices they believe are an insult to civic values and a threat to the very survival of government institutions.
The choice of Praça do Comércio for this non-violent protest emphasises the intent to raise awareness among Portuguese neighbours and the wider international community.
The organisers believe that mass mobilisations are a citizen's most effective tool for bringing about change and are calling for media coverage to amplify their message.
"We are mad as hell, and we want our government and the world to know it," they declare, reinforcing that the event on 28 March will be a demonstration of strength and unity in the name of political decency and the preservation of democracy, ensuring that the impact of this protest is felt across the Atlantic.

The effrontery of these "Americans" in Portugal is despicable and grotesque. Democratic elections have consequences and their side lost. Yet, they somehow imagine that it's "undemocratic" if Trump governs in the manner in which his democratic mandate allows. When political minorities claim that majorities have no right to govern as designated, that only illustrates their demagoguery and authoritarian bent. Aside from spending money in the economy, none of the supposed "No Kings Americans" do Portugal any good.

I am curious - based on this article and others I have read recently - is this publication of "news" just run by Americans for Americans living in Portugal? In this article you are promoting before and not reporting after something that is American focused - more like marketing for Americans from a biased point of view. If so, perhaps you might want to change the name to The Portuguese News for Americans Democrats Abroad.

@Tony from the usa Trump is not abiding by the US Constitution at all. He started an illegal war which is causing gas and food prices to rise expotentially. He was elected by a very small margin (1.5%) of voters. This is not a mandate, nor does it give him the right to rule as a monarch by pissing on the US Constitution. He has enriched himself since being in office to the tune of $8.5 billion because of his corruption and grifting. This is not democracy. Oh, by the way, US taxpayers are paying over $1 billion a day for this crazy and illegal war with Iran while American soldiers are dying, and Americans at home have expensive healthcare or no healthcare at all, poor education, poor infrasture, expensive housing, and rising prices on everything because of this war and his stupid tariffs. In the meantime his billionaire buddies and he himself and his family are getting richer while ordinary Americans suffer.

I need to respond to "Tony" from the USA. Democratic elections that are only pseudo-democratic do have consequences. The US ranks as a "flawed" democracy according to the Democracy Index; is only 57/180 in press freedom according to the World Press Freedom Index; and is tied for 29th in the Corruption Perception Index. In any case, a psuedo-democratic elections process certainly does not suspend the right to criticize the people in power, especially when surveys of historians and political scientists such as the Presidential Greatness Project have placed the current President as last among all presidents because of hese rankings often cite his two impeachments, challenges to democratic norms, and policy outcomes as reasons for the low i, depending on the number of, and handling of, non-consecutive terms). That’s actually part of democracy too. Winning an election isn’t a blank check to govern without opposition, and people speaking out—whether in the U.S. or abroad—doesn’t make them authoritarian or illegitimate. The real irony is claiming that dissent itself is undemocratic. In a functioning democracy, majorities govern, but minorities are absolutely entitled to challenge, protest, and hold those in power accountable. Implying that people are not real "Americans” for doing that says more about intolerance for disagreement, an inherent problem with the MAGA movement, than it does about democracy.

Donald Trump won by a very slim margin, and the election results are very much in doubt. In addition, the vast majority of people are not happy with his policies. This majority is over 60%, so these people have every right to be angry. The US is now a Fascist country by any definition, and only someone who is supportive of Fascists, happy with US citizens being kidnapped and shot in the street, and billions of dollars being grifted by the Trump administration, but especially by Trump, would be saying that these US citizens have no right to be angry. Trump supporters are complicit in the destruction of Democracy in the United States, and should be shunned.

The comment of "Tony" is highly emblematic of the problem that America faces. He puts "Americans" in quotes, as if people who live elsewhere or dare to protest the government are somehow less patriotic. He states that Mr Trump, since he won the election, should be free to govern as he pleases. What Tony forgets is that America is governed by a Constitution, and Mr. Trump chooses to ignore it. The world is governed by international law, and Mr. Trump thumbs his nose at it. He ignores the interests of his people in order to feed his own bloated ego, and he acts as if disloyalty to him is treason. I would remind Tony that blind loyalty to a corrupt, ignorant, megalomaniacal sociopath is most definitely NOT patriotism. Perhaps Tony should stop watching Newsmax for an afternoon and take a look at what is actually going on.

Does the corruption they will be protesting against include the massive frauds taking place in California, Minnesota and other democratic controlled states and cities?

Tony… ouch!

Truly priceless. The same people who told us we had to respect election results, who told us nobody is above the law, certainly do not practice what the preach when their party of choice is not in power.

I agree. These so called "Americans" were silent during the previous administrations open boarders, voter fraud, high inflation, release of billions of dollars to Iran, lies, and total disregard for the American citizenry. My wife and I love Portugal but to bad they have been polluted by some hypocritical US expats!

So sad to read that there are MAGA people here in our Portugal! Everybody has the right to protest here.. here is no ICE… no Trump and here is still liberty of speech. So or you adapt or even better go back to your dictator and to your best great ‘regime’ of liars and very rich dangerous fools. Bye now.
