In a statement, the municipal executive (PSD/CDS-PP) emphasises that this body, chaired by the councillor responsible for Equality, Helena Leal, "brings together different institutions and entities with the aim of contributing to the definition and implementation of public policies in this area."
The Municipal Council for Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination for the four-year period 2025-2029 took office on Monday, in a session chaired by the mayor, Jorge Carvalho.
Quoted in the note, the mayor underlines that "the promotion of equality and respect for diversity must be based on a formative and preventive logic, valuing a society based on respect for all people, regardless of their choices or conditions."

Portugal is no longer an independent country with its own values. It is a mere EU appendage. As such, what the pious virtue-signaling in the article is really saying is: we will respect the diversity of views and peoples that the EU tells us we must. Those outside that specific "diversity" must not and will not be tolerated. In a nutshell.
