In 2014, AIMA recorded that 16,559 UK citizens applied for residency in Portugal; by 2024, that number had soared to 48,238.
Different lifestyle
What makes Portugal interesting to people has changed: what used to be a popular holiday destination is now a full-time living destination for UK nationals. Despite the complications with Brexit and the new Entry/Exit System for countries outside the Schengen Area, Portugal remains the top choice for UK residents.

Thankfully, unlike the UK, Portugal is a civilised country!

If Brits knew how dysfunctional and dishonest AIMA is, they might choose differently.

As a UK pensioner it was an easy choice to become a resident in Portugal. For me the factors were economic in that it is far cheaper to here than in the UK and secondly it was the mild climate in the Algarve that was very attractive. I have not been disappointed and am so pleased that I have made the move. Thank you Portugal.
