The new wind farm is expected to begin operations in mid-2027.
Integrated power production
The project, Hyperion Renewables' first wind farm in Portugal, will allow the integration of wind power production with the Cavaleira Solar Power Plant in Estremoz and a battery storage system, bringing together three technologies in a single connection to the electricity grid.
Upon completion, the Nortada wind farm will be one of the first fully hybrid projects in Portugal, combining solar, wind and storage, with the aim of strengthening the energy system's flexibility and optimising the use of the existing electricity grid, according to a statement.
The project will feature seven Vestas turbines, for a total of 31.5 MW of installed capacity. Vestas will be responsible for supplying and installing the turbines, as well as for a long-term operation and maintenance contract, while Windpark will ensure the construction of the park.
Starting in 2027
The delivery of the turbines is scheduled for early 2027, with operation expected to begin in the middle of the same year.
“This is a pioneering project in Central Alentejo and a strategic milestone for Hyperion: it is our first wind farm in Portugal and demonstrates that it is possible to accelerate the energy transition with innovative projects,” says Aytea Amandi-Alvarez, CEO of Hyperion Renewables, quoted in the same statement.
“By combining wind, solar and storage at the same connection point, we strengthen the flexibility and robustness of the electrical system and move forward with an innovative and sustainable solution,” adds the head of the Iberian company.
"We are extremely pleased to collaborate with Hyperion on this landmark hybrid project that sets a new milestone in the renewable energy landscape in Portugal. At Vestas, we continue to demonstrate that, with the right technology, wind energy can be developed anywhere," points out Tiago Palma Veigas, head of Vestas for Portugal.
In turn, the CEO of Windpark, Mario de Gaviria, highlights the "pleasure of collaborating with two great companies" and contributing to this type of hybrid project. "We are fully committed to initiatives that integrate multiple renewable energy generation systems, optimising grid connections and reducing environmental impact," he concludes.
