For three nights running, the cast performed this witty, touching and wonderfully entertaining musical revue, as part of Lagoa’s Humorfest.
Music and Stage Director Paul Legault delivered a confident and stylish production, which he enriched with his previous experience of the show in his native Ottawa. His inspired sense of comedic timing and strong musical leadership ensured a lively pace and a clear narrative flow throughout, allowing both humour and heartfelt moments to land beautifully with audiences.
As musical director and pianist, he was on stage with live musicians - a first for the group.
Flautist Maria and violinist Petra brought colour, elegance and theatrical energy to the performance, working seamlessly alongside Paul at the piano to create a professional and engaging musical atmosphere.
Minimalist staging, stylish artwork, musical sound bites and good lighting accompanied brisk set changes, made all the more diverting by comic miming around title cards, guiding the audience to the next episode. Particularly notable was the calm efficiency backstage, reflecting the strong teamwork that underpinned the entire production.
The well-observed scenes told stories - at times edgy, frank, preposterous, revealing - and the nine members of the cast were put through their paces, changing costumes, accents, moods and characters. Not afraid to portray the vulnerability and downright awkward positions we might remember witnessing at times in our own lives.
They represented the very spirit of community theatre — bringing together enthusiastic newcomers and experienced performers ranging in age from 30 to an inspiring 85. Their commitment, versatility and collective energy created a warm ensemble performance that resonated strongly with the audience. This vibrant production celebrated relationships, laughter and life itself — and stands as another proud achievement for The Algarveans Theatre Group.
