Gryffin was introduced by members to the Association for the Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA). After brain surgery at 16, Gryffin did not expect to live more than 30 years. Today, he is building a unique service for people with disabilities. Not only does he understand the individual’s problem at source, but he can also provide a tailored package.
Train people and their dogs to co-exist and overcome many day-to-day difficulties. Help select the right dog for them to be in "service" and train people in this job within the community. "Organisations have long waiting lists. People who want to help just don’t know where to start!” Gryffin starts to tick off the list. “Disabled people stay isolated longer than necessary. There are gaps where people just fall through.”
Having set up his dream by experiencing everything firsthand, he knows instinctively what people need and how to train them. “Teaching dogs real service tasks for real disabilities.” The list is endless. For some, a lonely life is a daily nightmare, and that too can be overcome, with the right partner. The right friend. Not every dog will be a suitable candidate. A dog that tears off and disappears may be great for a fit ‘chaser’ but not for a disabled person or someone who needs a constant companion. Through animals, we build confidence. Visit Gryffin’s website and get an idea of his "mission".
APAA’s president, Jenny, has an older dog, Jimmy, who had a small stroke. “I thought that was it. But, no, he soldiered on and has survived to live another doggy life.” Animals need humans as much as we humans need them. A partnership at the very least!
