“The Piornos-Torre, Torre-Torre and Torre Lagoa Comprida sections of National Road (EN) 339 were closed to road traffic at 10:15 pm because of the snow, which fell heavily since late afternoon,” a source from the Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of Beiras and Serra da Estrela confirmed to the Lusa news agency.

According to the same source, “there is snow accumulation at the highest points of the Serra da Estrela,” and the resources of the Centro de Limpeza dos Piornos, in the municipality of Covilhã, were activated to clear the road.

The IPMA predicts these conditions will persist until the end of the morning, "above 1,400 metres of altitude, gradually rising to the highest points of the Serra da Estrela."
