Travel insurance specialists used criteria such as safety, cost of stay, accommodation options, digital connectivity, and the diversity of offerings to create the ranking in the 2026 Solo Travel Index. Lisbon stands out for its 3960 available guided tours, reinforcing its competitiveness in the segment.
Lisbon stands out for combining accessibility with diversity and objective conditions for those who decide to travel alone. Its position in the ranking is also reinforced by a safety index of 67.4 points, which is a key factor for those travelling alone to another country.
António Valle, director-general of the Lisbon Tourism Association, quoted by Publituris, says that “this recognition highlights Lisbon's ability to increasingly assert itself as an exclusive and authentic destination. Lisbon and its metropolitan area are today a destination that stands out for the quality of its cultural and tourist offerings, attracting more demanding audiences, which reinforces its competitiveness and contributes to tourism that generates greater social and economic value.”
Most popular way to travel
The analysis also notes that the trend of travelling alone is increasing, and data show that 69% of travellers intend to travel alone in 2025. In addition, Google searches for this segment have increased by 223% in the last 10 years.
One of the most popular reasons for travelling alone, according to the study, is the desire to see the world without waiting for others, cited by 74% of respondents. The freedom to make all travel decisions is the main reason for 57% of respondents. Getting out of their comfort zone is the main reason for 54% of respondents. Best cities for solo travel
Research shows that solo travellers found the best experience in Madrid, followed by Prague. Lisbon ranks third, followed by Paris in fourth place, before Reykjavik, Iceland.
