According to the ICA, January was the only month of the quarter that exceeded the mark of one million entries - 1,281,747 viewers - possibly driven by the premiere of "The Handmaiden", the most watched film until March.
The first quarter of 2026 also totalled €18.7 million in box office revenue, with an increase of 11.3% - that is, €1.9 million more - compared to the same period in 2025.
Analysing this period, January recorded €8.8 million in revenue, more than double that of March.
Between January and March, the most-watched film was "The Housemaid," by Paul Feig, with 548,151 admissions, followed by "Avatar: Fire and Ash," by James Cameron, with 272,668 viewers, and the animated film "Zootopia 2," by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, with 182,545 tickets issued.
"Terra Vil," by Luís Campos, was the most-watched Portuguese film in theatres that quarter, with 3,681 viewers, followed by "Entroncamento," by Pedro Cabeleira, which, since its premiere on 26 March, has garnered 3,423 viewers. "Maria Vitória," by Mário Patrocínio, totalled 2,142 viewers.
In March, 482 movie theatres were operating in Portugal, that is, theatres whose exhibitors and operating entities provided statistical activity data to the ICA.
