In the heart of Lisbon’s Baixa, the Casa do Alentejo stands as one of the city’s most beautiful architectural secrets. From the outside, the 17th-century facade of the building is unassuming, but once you step through the doors, you are transported across continents and eras.
Originally an aristocratic residence, the building underwent a radical transformation in the early 20th century, becoming a "monumental casino" and social club. The interior is a mix of styles: a stunning Neo-Moorish courtyard that feels like a slice of the Alhambra, followed by lavish Baroque ballrooms.
In 1932, it found its true soul when it was acquired by the people of the Alentejo region. What was once a playground for the elite became a sanctuary for migrants from the south seeking work in the capital. Today, the transition is complete.
