This recognition from the German publication Trekking Magazine places the Algarve just behind the Dolomites/South Tyrol in Italy and Brittany in France, underscoring its growing reputation as a top hiking destination.

The vote included about 35,000 Trekking Magazine readers. This result supports the Algarve's strategy to diversify tourism by promoting nature tourism and reducing seasonality.

Key routes such as the Via Algarviana, crossing the interior, and the Rota Vicentina, along the Atlantic coast, contributed significantly to this recognition.

André Gomes, president of Turismo do Algarve, notes that this recognition is a historic milestone, placing Southern Portugal ahead of established Alpine destinations. He highlights its role in supporting sustainable development in low-density territories and generating direct economic impact in areas previously excluded from the "sun and sea" tourist route.

This accolade coincides with the start of the Algarve Walking Season, which features five walking festivals, showcasing the region's active tourism offerings.

With growing interest in active tourism from markets such as Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, the Algarve is establishing itself as a year-round destination, offering trails that showcase local culture and landscapes beyond its beaches. This momentum further positions the region as a top choice for travellers seeking authentic outdoor experiences year-round.
