The aim is to help young people explore Europe’s cultural diversity, history, and architecture by train. Train travel is the most sustainable mode of transportation. This experience also helps build a sense of European identity and shared values.
This year’s edition is especially meaningful. It marks the 40th anniversary of the Schengen Area, which allows free movement between 29 countries.
Applications are open until 22 April. If you are eligible—born between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008 and a citizen or resident of the EU or Erasmus+ associated countries—don’t miss your chance to apply. Winners can travel alone or with up to four friends for up to 30 days between July 2026 and September 2027.
Along with the train ticket, participants will get practical help for their trip. This includes a discount card for accommodation, food, cultural activities, and local transport. Glenn Micallef, European Commissioner for Youth, points out that for many, this will be their first chance to travel on their own.
Whether you plan your own trip or choose the pre-planned "Culture Route," seize this opportunity to travel sustainably, discover Europe, and create lasting memories. Take action now and help promote greener travel as Europe invests more in rail connections.
