The association's reaction follows the executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, warning that Europe will have "perhaps six more weeks of jet fuel" if oil and gas supplies through the Strait of Hormuz remain blocked, previously reported by The Portugal News.

In statements to Lusa, the executive director of RENA, António Moura Portugal, considered that the warning should be read as "another serious warning of the consequences that this war is having, and in particular for the aviation sector."

According to him, the shortage of aviation fuel is a theoretical risk on the table that could affect the aviation sector, as well as other activities dependent on critical raw materials.

In this scenario, he said, the situation “may lead to the need to reduce operations and, eventually, raise prices.”

António Moura Portugal stressed, however, that airlines remain in a phase of expectation and monitoring the evolution of the conflict, without drastic measures in Portugal related to the crisis in the Middle East.

“To date, I have not seen any kind of definitiveness from the airlines [in Portugal],” he said, adding that “at the moment there is a certain expectation” and that, for now, he wants to leave “this word of reassurance.”
