The team led by coach Francisco Neto secured a place in the qualifying play-offs and is also very close to winning Group B3 (and ascending to the first division of the Nations League), having won all four games played in 2026, which allowed them to move up one position in the FIFA hierarchy, compared to the update of 11 December 2025.
The Portuguese national team had a 100% winning record in the qualifying tournament, having beaten Finland (2-0), Latvia (3-0) and Slovakia (4-0 and 2-1), which was reflected in the first ranking update, in which they benefited from Austria's drop of three places.
Portugal's best-ever ranking in the world women's football hierarchy is 19th place, achieved on 25 August 2023, after the World Cup of the same year, held in Australia and New Zealand.
Spain remains at the top of the ranking, ahead of the United States and England, which displaced Germany from third place, while Japan made the biggest climb in the top 10, rising three positions to fifth, in contrast to Sweden, which fell three places to eighth.
The next FIFA ranking update is scheduled for 16 June.
