Housed in a grand Neoclassical building, the market spreads across two lively floors connected by staircases and four entrances, each opening onto a different level of the surrounding streets. From Rua Formosa you step straight into the ground floor, while the side entrances on Rua de Sá da Bandeira and Rua Alexandre Braga lead to a mezzanine overlooking the bustle below. The northern entrance on Rua de Fernandes Tomás brings visitors directly to the upper level.

Inside, Bolhão is all about fresh, local produce. Fishmongers, butchers, greengrocers, and florists each occupy their own dedicated sections, creating a colourful and aromatic atmosphere. Around the outside of the building, small shops offer everything from clothing and fabrics to cafés and perfumeries.

Recognised for its cultural and architectural value, Bolhão Market was declared a property of public interest in 2006 and later classified as a monument of public interest in 2013.
