Most of the arrests were made in Vila Real and Braga, with 14 in each district, followed by Leiria (10) and Viseu (7).
According to GNR data, most of those arrested were between 41 and 50 years old (18), between 51 and 64 years old (16), and between 75 and 84 years old (13).
Within the scope of "Operation Safe Forest 2026", which is underway, the GNR (National Republican Guard) has identified 7,664 plots of land for mandatory clearing, most of them in the district of Leiria (1,794), followed by Bragança (1,068), Santarém (594), Braga (486), Viseu (480) and Coimbra (454).
As of 15 April, 7,675.30 hectares had been burned, according to provisional data, and in 2025, 3,418 hectares were burned.
In the note, GNR recommends that citizens not conduct controlled burns or open fires without prior registration on official platforms or authorisation from local authorities, and that they avoid fires on days with strong winds or high temperatures.
It also advises citizens never to abandon burning leftover debris without ensuring it is completely extinguished.
