The 2024 vintage declarations from the Fladgate Partnership amounts to one of the most intriguing Port releases in recent years: very small in scale and with exceptionally fine quality. It has been 7 years since the last generally declared Vintage release!

The winter of 2023/24 restored much-needed water reserves to the Douro Valley for a second consecutive year, and an early budburst in March gave the season a favourable beginning. Spring and early summer were comparatively cool, with light, well-timed rain encouraging even vine growth.

A long dry spell then set in from July, while veraison began in mid-July under mild conditions that favoured steady ripening. August brought warmth and some pressure on the vines, yet the decisive turn came at the end of the month, when cooler days and markedly fresher nights in September allowed the fruit to finish ripening. The resulting 2024 Vintage Ports are marked by freshness, aromatic definition, fine tannins and the acidity that gives both immediate brilliance and long cellar promise.

Taylor’s Vintage 2024 is deeply coloured and beautifully restrained, with blackcurrant and woodland fruit set against floral and herbal inflections. On the palate it is tightly drawn and sinewy, with that unmistakable Taylor combination of poise, stamina and refinement.

Taylor’s Sentinels 2024 offers the lively elegance of the Pinhão valley. Its deep purple hue and layered scents of blackcurrant, dark plum and cherry give way to a palate of real energy, where damson, plum and dark berry fruit flavours prevail. There is generosity here, but also definition: the finish is persistent, polished and defined.

Fonseca 2024 moves in a more voluptuous direction. The nose is especially alluring, combining dark cherry, cassis and blackcurrant, crushed mint and an almost exotic, airy sweetness. On the palate it is rich and enveloping, yet its luxuriance is checked by taut tannins and a vivid, racing acidity. Notes of wild herbs and fine spice add complexity to what is, above all, a deeply pleasurable wine. It has the sensuality one expects from a young Fonseca.

Croft 2024 completes the picture with a more openly aromatic and exotic profile. Ripe strawberry, rockrose, spice, clove and eucalyptus rise immediately from the glass, announcing a wine of charm as much as structure. There is a delicious purity of fruit with fine tannins and incredible length.

Taken together, these four Vintages make a compelling case for 2024 as a vintage of not only elegance but incredible complexity. They show that a great Vintage Port remains one of the world’s most distinctive luxury wines: capable of grandeur in youth, yet built for long term cellaring.

For drinkers and collectors alike, these releases offer not just rarity, but real pleasure — the kind that begins in exuberant fruit and ends in the slow, profound rewards of time.
