According to the latest research from TUI, both cities rank among the top locations for quality family time, reflecting a lifestyle that is drawing increasing interest from those considering more than just short visits.
The study assessed a range of practical factors, including access to parks, availability of family-friendly accommodation, and the variety of activities for children. Lisbon claimed the top spot with an impressive score of 9.16 out of 10, bolstered by its abundance of green spaces and easily accessible leisure opportunities.
Porto also performed strongly, placing third with a score of 9.01, thanks to its combination of outdoor areas, family-focused infrastructure, and proximity to the coast.
Both cities have also been recognised more broadly, featuring in the Happy City Index 2026.
Day-to-day life in Lisbon allows families to move freely between neighbourhood parks, cafés, and cultural venues without the need for long journeys or complex planning.

Porto, meanwhile, offers a more relaxed rhythm, where riverside strolls and nearby beaches such as Matosinhos can become part of everyday life rather than occasional treats.
The research also highlighted a clear preference among families for experiences such as theme parks, boat trips, and outdoor activities when travelling. In Portugal, these experiences are not confined to holidays.
The country’s climate, city design, and emphasis on public spaces make it easier to incorporate them into everyday routines.
This helps explain why many visitors begin to reassess their relationship with Portugal after spending time there. What may begin as a short family getaway often leads to thoughts about a more permanent move, as people recognise that the same qualities that enhance a holiday can also support a more balanced lifestyle.

For parents, this can translate into more time spent outdoors with children, reduced reliance on cars, and a stronger sense of community.
While practical factors such as education and healthcare remain key considerations — both of which are well catered for in Portugal — lifestyle is often what ultimately shapes decisions.
Other cities featured in the ranking, including Naples, Catania, and Barcelona, continue to appeal to families seeking memorable travel experiences. Portugal, however, is increasingly being viewed through a different lens, not simply as a destination to visit, but as a place to call home.
