Set to become operational in early May, the centre will focus on both Generative AI and so-called “agentic AI” — systems capable of acting autonomously — to help companies accelerate digital transformation and deliver tangible business results.
The move builds on CGI’s already significant presence in the country, where more than 2,000 employees are based. From Portugal, the company supports not only local clients but also projects across several European markets, including Finland, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
According to Gonçalo Lança, Senior Vice-President at CGI, one of the world’s largest IT and business consulting companies, the new centre will expand the company’s ability to deliver AI-driven solutions at scale, helping organisations improve efficiency, enhance decision-making and unlock measurable value.
Larger role
Portugal is set to play a larger role in CGI’s international operations, with the company highlighting the country as a growing hub of innovation. Carlos Lourenço, Senior Vice-President for CGI in Portugal, said the new centre will help build on local know-how while expanding work in AI development.
The initiative will also bring CGI into closer collaboration with universities and higher education institutions across the country, with the aim of helping train future talent and supporting research in the field.
AI-powered solutions
From its Portuguese base, CGI is already delivering AI-powered solutions across sectors — from banking software development and intelligent service management tools to healthcare applications using computer vision and advanced decision-support systems.
Founded in 1976, CGI is one of the world’s largest independent IT and business consulting firms, employing around 94,000 professionals globally.
