In a statement, the Portuguese rider’s team confirmed that Miguel Oliveira will sit out the round to recover from injuries sustained in the Superpole race at last weekend’s event in Hungary, namely fractures to his shoulder blade and ribs.

According to the Bavarian team, Miguel Oliveira suffered a concussion, fractures to his shoulder blade and ribs, as well as injuries to the tendons in his left shoulder.

“I will now focus on my recovery so I can return to the team as soon as possible,” said the rider from Almada, quoted in the BMW team’s press release.

Oliveira was caught up in a pile-up at the start of the weekend’s shortest race on 3 May and was hit by Italian rider Andrea Locatelli’s Yamaha.

“Of course, I’m very disappointed, because with the podium finish on Saturday, we showed that we’re on the right track for success,” said the Portuguese rider.

Oliveira noted that, “unfortunately, injuries can happen in this sport”. “But I’m going to focus on recovering to get back to 100 per cent,” he concluded.

The Portuguese rider will be replaced in this race, the fifth of the championship, by Dutchman Michael van der Mark, a BMW World Endurance Championship rider.

The team concluded that Miguel Oliveira’s physical condition will be monitored over the coming weeks, and the decision on his return to competition will be made closer to the next race.
