The leader of the opposition party also states that the situation could be resolved through a referendum.

The position was taken in response to journalists at the Assembly of the Republic, following the Constitutional Court's decision declaring the loss of nationality as an accessory penalty unconstitutional. The bill proposed that loss of nationality be included in the Penal Code; however, it was rejected for violating the principles of equality and proportionality.

André Ventura acknowledged that the TC's decision was a defeat for the party and argues that the judicial institution is neglecting the interests of the majority of the population and the legislator.

André Ventura, who intends to talk to the right-wing majority in Parliament, argues that if a consensus is not reached, a referendum should be held so that the parties know the will of the Portuguese people.

"Let's ask the Portuguese people this: For those who acquired Portuguese nationality and commit crimes of terrorism, rape, homicide, kidnapping, and even others, do you agree or not that they should lose their Portuguese nationality?", he questioned, as quoted by SIC Notícias.
