Now entering its second year, TEDxMarvila has quickly established itself as one of Lisbon’s most ambitious cultural and ideas-driven events bringing together creatives, entrepreneurs, artists, thinkers and changemakers for conversations that go far beyond the traditional event format.

The first edition drew nearly a thousand attendees and was built with the support of volunteers, sponsors and a growing international community.

This year’s edition promises to be even bigger.

But according to Imanbay, the origins of TEDxMarvila were never strategic or commercially driven.

In the interview, she reveals that the idea emerged after surviving a life-threatening infection following childbirth - an experience that fundamentally changed her perspective on life, purpose and legacy.

“I realised I wanted to build something meaningful,” she explains. “Something that could genuinely impact people and leave something behind for my son.”

That sense of meaning remains central to the event’s identity. While TEDxMarvila has gained momentum quickly, Imanbay believes its success comes from its human foundation and volunteer-led spirit.

“The community starts with a human believing in an idea,” she says.

This year’s edition, taking place in Lisbon’s creative district of Marvila, centres around the theme “What is Love?” - exploring the subject through four lenses: Feelings, Emotions, Actions and Illusions.

The programme will feature a diverse mix of speakers, performers and artists, including Haddaway, the artist behind the iconic 1993 hit What Is Love?

Beyond the talks themselves, TEDxMarvila has become known for the connections it creates off-stage - from friendships and creative collaborations to entirely new businesses and projects.

At its core, Imanbay says the mission remains simple: to create a space rooted in honesty, authenticity and human connection, where even one person might leave inspired to become a better human being.

TEDxMarvila takes place on Sunday, 24 May at Pátio da Galé in Lisbon.
