On Tuesday, 12 May, bar owner David Larson presented a €557 donation to Debby Burton, founder of Associação Alerta de Incendio Floristal/Forest Fire Alert (Alerta).

The Wandering Fools, which opened earlier this year on Carvoeiro’s in-road, has quickly become a local community hub. Since January, customers have been contributing donations, with many of them coming during the bar’s popular Tuesday night quiz events.

Alerta supports firefighters by providing both practical assistance and up-to-date information for communities living and working in the Algarve and Lower Alentejo. During fire season, stations often run short of essentials such as portable food and drinks, medical supplies, and even dry socks, with volunteers helping to ensure crews have what they need while on duty.

Over the years, the organisation has also funded larger purchases, including replacement uniforms, PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic and even a defibrillator to support bombeiros and the communities they serve.

Alongside its support work, Alerta’s volunteer-run Facebook page provides regular fire updates and acts as a platform for the community to share information and offer support during emergencies.
