Batalha is a historic city located in the Central region of Portugal, belonging to the district of Leiria. Known for its rich cultural and architectural heritage, Batalha has become one of the country's most emblematic destinations, thanks to the impressive Batalha Monastery.
The monastery was built after the Portuguese victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, symbolising the independence and strength of the Portuguese nation. Among the most fascinating parts of the monument are the famous Unfinished Chapels, also known as the unfinished monastery. Planned to serve as the royal pantheon of the Avis dynasty, the works were never completed, leaving arches open to the sky and unique details of Gothic and Manueline architecture.
The combination of the monument's grandeur with its unfinished appearance creates a unique and mysterious atmosphere. Currently, the monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and receives visitors from all over the world, being one of the greatest historical and cultural symbols of Portugal.
