Praia de Monte Clérigo, located along the stunning Costa Vicentina, took the top spot in this year’s ranking, which highlights Europe’s best sandy beaches.

The annual list is created after an initial selection of beaches across Europe, evaluated on factors including natural beauty, accessibility, atmosphere, and visitor experience. A final shortlist is then voted on by an international panel of travellers.

According to European Best Destinations, Praia de Monte Clérigo was recognised for its laid-back atmosphere and unspoilt surroundings, offering a very different experience from Portugal’s busier beach hotspots. Set between rugged cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean, the beach is part of the protected Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, an area known for its wild scenery and slower pace of life.

Monte Clérigo has also become a favourite with walkers, surfers and nature lovers, with coastal trails leading to dramatic viewpoints and quieter stretches of coastline nearby. Despite its growing popularity, the area still keeps a more local and low-key feel, while accommodation prices remain considerably lower than in many of Portugal’s better-known seaside destinations.

Second place went to Voutoumi Beach in Greece, praised for its crystal-clear waters and white pebbles. The beach was also ranked as the most beautiful in Europe.

Greece continued to dominate the list, with Fteri Beach taking third place and Elafonissi Beach ranking fourth.

Italy completed the top five with Bogliasco Beach, while Spain also featured with Cala Mesquida.

Among the more unexpected entries was Kvalvika Beach in Norway, a remote beach only accessible on foot, known for its untouched scenery and isolated atmosphere.

The ranking’s top 10 also included Rovinia Beach, Kaputaş Beach and Paleokastritsa.
