On Sunday, 24 May, lovers of ‘two wheels’ flocked to the Church of Penina in Portimão for the Blessing of Motorcyclists and Cyclists.
The weather turned out perfect for the hundreds of people arriving on motorbikes and by bicycles, who came together for this religious event in an atmosphere of unity and solidarity.
The Blessing of Motorcyclists and Cyclists was organised by Moto Grupo do Arade and Centro de Ciclismo de Portimão. The religious ceremony was delivered by Padre Rui with readings from the Bible by members of Moto Grupo do Arade. Following the ceremony was the traditional blessing of the participants and their vehicles and helmets, with everyone gathering at the entrance to the church, some standing, some mounted. It was a moment marked by a strong sense of community and brotherhood as Padre Rui passed between the participants and blessed them with Holy Water.
In addition to its religious aspect, the initiative also had an important charitable aim: to raise funds for the association ‘Dar Amor’, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting people with cancer, their families and caregivers.
Commemorative stickers of the occasion were sold for a token value of €1, and bottles of water were available in exchange for whatever value people wished to give, with all funds going to Associação Dar Amor. In total, over €550 was raised through the generosity of the participants.
The organisers highlighted the strong turnout for the event and thanked all participants and supporters of the cause for their contribution, emphasising the importance of initiatives that promote solidarity and social support within the community.
The Blessing of Motorcyclists and Cyclists thus reaffirmed its status as a landmark event in Portimão, bringing together tradition, camaraderie and solidarity around a noble cause.
