A source from the Public Security Police told Lusa that 360 new agents will join the National Foreigners and Borders Unit (UNEF), and 210 will join the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP.
The 360 police officers who go to the UNEF will immediately begin the four-week border guard course to start working at airports at the beginning of July. This reinforcement is part of the PSP's contingency plan for the summer and aims to reduce waiting lines for passengers from outside the Schengen area.
Distribution by airports
According to the PSP, 150 will be placed at Lisbon airport, 90 in Porto, 70 in Faro, 30 in the Azores and 20 in Madeira.
The PSP also justifies the placement of police officers in the Lisbon area with the fact that it is mostly from the police force of this command that the police officers needed to perform duties in the National Directorate, Special Police Unit, ISCPSI (Institute of Social and Political Studies and Security), PSP social services, and Lisbon Municipal Police come.
A new agent training course with 683 candidates is scheduled to begin in June and conclude at the end of December. This number reflects the corporation’s difficulty in filling the 800 planned vacancies and, for several years, its failure to obtain the desired number of agent candidates.
