Guarding the western edge of Ponta Delgada's harbour on São Miguel Island, the Forte de São Brás is a materialised titan of Atlantic history. Erected during the 16th century under the direction of military engineers. This formidable stone fortress was built to defend the Azores against relentless raids by pirates and rebels. It stands today as the most important example of old military architecture in the archipelago.

It is truly fascinating to explore its classic quadrangular layout, featuring powerful polygonal bastions designed to withstand the heavy artillery of a bygone era. Over the centuries, the fort adapted to global conflicts, shifting from a shield against privateers to a military outpost during the World Wars. Today, the historic structure houses the Military Museum of the Azores, where vintage machinery and weapons sit against a backdrop of panoramic ocean views. Interesting how even in the most peaceful places, we find the traces of a past that fought for its peace to remain.
