“It is with great enthusiasm that we mark the beginning of Portuguese Heritage Month, a special opportunity to celebrate the richness of Portuguese culture and the immense contribution of Portuguese-Canadian communities to this country,” said Marc Miller in a statement.
The minister recalled that the links between Portugal and Canada date back several centuries, noting that Portuguese explorers were among the first Europeans to reach the east coast of North America.
According to Miller, Portuguese immigration intensified from the 1950s onward, when thousands of Portuguese families, mostly from the Azores, chose to immigrate to Canada to build a new life.
"Thanks to their courage, resilience and hard work, Portuguese families have helped shape the Canada we know today, putting down roots and actively engaging in their communities," he emphasised.
The minister also highlighted the presence of Portuguese Canadians in areas such as the arts, music, medicine, science, education, sports, entrepreneurship, and community life.
“Their talents, passion, and dedication help make our communities more vibrant, united, and welcoming every day,” he added.
Marc Miller also considered that Portuguese Heritage Month is an opportunity for Canadians to learn more about the traditions, language, gastronomy, and celebrations associated with Portuguese culture.
A few days before the celebrations of Portugal Day, Camões Day, and Portuguese Communities Day, celebrated on 10 June, the minister invited the population to participate in the initiatives organised throughout the country.
The federal government has officially recognised June as Portuguese Heritage Month since 2017, following the unanimous approval of a motion in the House of Commons that also established June 10th as Portugal Day in Canada.
According to data from the 2021 census by Canada's federal statistics agency, approximately 448,310 people reported Portuguese ancestry, making the Portuguese-Canadian community one of the oldest and largest European-origin communities in the country.
