Representing the Portimão Soup Kitchen, The Portugal News had the distinct honour of attending a Garden Party hosted by Their Royal Highnesses The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duchess of Edinburgh at the British Ambassador’s Residence in Lisbon on 1 June 2026.

The event marked the 640th anniversary of the historic Treaty of Windsor, celebrating the enduring friendship between Portugal and the United Kingdom. As volunteers and supporters of the Portimão Soup Kitchen, The Portugal News was proud to represent an organisation dedicated to serving some of the most vulnerable members of our local community.

Throughout the evening, Their Royal Highnesses took the time to meet and engage with representatives from a wide range of charities, social enterprises, community groups and organisations working across Portugal. Their genuine interest and willingness to listen created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, allowing guests to share the impact of their work and the challenges faced by the communities they support.

In her welcome address, British Ambassador Lisa Bandari highlighted the significance of the occasion, noting that the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were visiting Portugal during the 640th anniversary year of the Treaty of Windsor, “an agreement that sealed a friendship which has endured across the centuries, and a deep alliance rooted in shared values and a common vision.”

It was a memorable evening and a privilege to celebrate the important work of community organisations while reinforcing the longstanding ties between Portugal and the United Kingdom. The Portugal News remains committed to supporting the Portimão Soup Kitchen and the many volunteers whose dedication continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
